Gateway to Jazz

Gateway to Jazz is a band that has been awarded First Prize at the Taipei Jazz Festival. Jazz united these four musicians from different musical backgrounds; their collaboration always leaves an impactful and long-lasting impression.

Taipei Jazz Orchestra

Taipei Jazz Orchestra is one of the most professional big band in Taiwan. Formed in 2008, led by saxophonist Cheng-Yu Lee, this new group consists of many talented, experienced musicians who are passionate to big band music. Taipei Jazz Orchestra rehearses weekly and has held several performances in the past years including concerts, promotional tour in campus, and shows in jazz club. For further goal, Taipei Jazz Orchestra attends to promote jazz through big band music in Taiwan.

Mary Bites Kerry

Founded in 2009 Mary Bites Kerry is one of the rare Taiwanese bands to mix a brass section to a punchy rock structure. It's one of the even more rare Ska band of Taiwan that also plays punk, which makes it the only Ska punk band of the island.Starting with a fresh sound and the sweet taste of youth back in the time, Mary Bites Kerry have become a veteran band in the Taiwan scene, but don't be fooled: Mary has teeth and still bites with energy. When it's about getting a crowd crazy with music, MBK gives the tone and sets the bar high. Once with up to 11 musicians on the scene, the 8 pieces formation has always met warm enthusiasm ( aka: there was always more people down the stage than on it! ). If you want to share a laugh, shake your body, vent your frustrations, have some chill time, or just enjoy the view of handsome guys, then Mary Bites Kerry is for you.

Lohas Wind Band

Lohas Wind Band was successfully formed, in summer of 2016, by a group of energetic and enthusiastic people in a wide age-range and from various fields, but there's one goal in common, which is "Having fun, and let's Lohas !" "Lohas" performs a variety of music, interacts closely with the audience and shares the enjoyments of life by the music. We are not only focusing on exquisite music itself but also introducing the theatrical magic into our performance. We are committed to culture and arts, a great combination of creative ideas and cross-over theater aesthetics, giving the band a different style and performance surprises. In September 2016, we are officially entering the "Chiayi Cultural and Creative Industry Park" making us the first musical group official stationed in the Park. It is indeed a new milestone and also the affirmation of Lohas. Lohas Wind Band will continue its mission : "Having fun, and let's Lohas !"

Funky Brothers

Formed in 2007, the Funky Brothers get their inspiration from the 70~80’s, the golden age of Funk, Soul and Disco. Add some Blues, R&B, Acid Jazz or Reggae and that will give you a taste of what the Brothers mix to have the audience dance into their borderless world. The power – we might as well say the magic- of the Funky Brothers is based on a friendly groove and dedicated to anyone, to everybody, to the world, to you, to us all.

BEATBoX SAX

Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, saxophone innovator Derek Brown’s unique playing style, using creative, new “beatbox-like” techniques, has wowed audiences across the globe. Previously the director of jazz studies at Abilene Christian University for the last six years, Derek now lives and performs in Chicago, USA, playing in various bands and projects around the area and throughout the world. His recent BEATBoX SAX music videos and weekly tutorials on YouTube have been very popular among saxophonists and music lovers alike, leading to endorsements with Legere, Jody Jazz, P.Mauriat, BG, and AMT. Recent performances include appearances in China, Germany, Poland, UK, Norway, Malaysia, Latvia, and throughout the U.S, as well as the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, France.

Black and White Play Band

From Chiayi 's Black and White Play Band: composed by Ben, Larry Lai, Jeff, Leo, George, want to bring positive music is also concerned about some social issues is the establishment of the purpose. Adding elements of trumpet, with special sound, and musicians unique rhythm arrangement, so that paragraphs filled with more emotional climax after another. We will bring you some classic songs and creative at the International Band Festival of Chiayi City. Let’s explode positive energy.

Basic Notes Jazz Big Band

Basic Notes Jazz Big Band, Hong Kong

Basic Notes Jazz Big Band was founded in 1993 by a group of Hong Kong local young amateurs, who were enthusiastic about jazz music. After years of learning and practice, the band was invited to participate in the Hong Kong Youth Art Festival, Hong Kong Fringe Festival, Hong Kong International Band Fair, Hong Kong Big Band Fest, Slider Asia, Macau Band Fair and Macau Band Festival. The Band maintains regular practice and holds their concert once a year. Also, the band has given frequent performance in public at city halls, theaters, cultural centre and Fringe Club.

Wave Girl

A newly formed (2015) band leaded by healing female voice. Like to creat a clear and delightful atmosphere through pop music while blending in unique spicy. They are warm, yet possessing sadness. They are refreshing, yet sorrow reminding.
They are sweetly crazy. Switching between sides of generations' projection, looking forward to pick up pieces of heart which is broken.

SKARAOKE

SKARAOKE = SKA + KARAOKE Their band name was inspired by the common past-time of the people of Taiwan and Japan. The popular singing culture of the "KARAOKE".Added to the front of the word, is the band's favorite genre of music, "SKA" (derived from the popular music of 1960s Jamaica). These two elements, placed together, became "SKARAOKE"! As the name implies, SKARAOKE music is like a karaoke party with friends together doing the Ska, mellow, fun, exciting, and sometimes even outrageously loud and crazy!

Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban

Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band

Formed in November 2010, Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band aims to lead audiences to experience the unpredictability of jazz improvisation through Afro-Cuban rhythms. Bandleader Tsung-Yu (Vincent) Hsu received a Master’s in Jazz Performance from
the New York University with a major in double bass. His debut album, “Homeland,” released in 2014, has won the “Best Jazz Album of the Year” by the 5th Golden Indie Music Award of Ministry of Culture and got three nominations by the 26th Golden Melody Awards in 2015, including “Best Composer,” “Best Album,” and “Best Album Producer,” in the Instrumental category. After eight fruitful years of danzon, salsa and Latin jazz learning in New York, Vincent returned to Taiwan in 2010 with an ambition to bring back the Afro-Cuban cultural roots and the sound of Harlem. “Soy La Ley” means “I am the law” in Spanish, coming from Pete“El Conde” Rodriguez’s Latin jazz album. “I am the law” clearly indicates the professional musicians’ resolution, persistence and passion in the choice of music as their career.

Cloud Wanderer

Cloud Wanderer was formed in 2014. The group have their own characteristic that bass on saxophone and rock instruments. They performed at Siam Motor Building (14 December 2014) and College of Music, Mahidol University (16 December 2014). In 2015, they started the world tour concerts series in Thailand, China and finally in World Saxophone Congress in France. In the same year they released an EP Album & quot; Glide Beyond the Time & quot; in 2016, the band join & quot; The Inner Dream Concert II & quot; they present music of progressive rock band & quot; Dream Theater" with an orchestra. Program Justification Cloud Wanderer will present progressive rock music with saxophone. The group combining new techniques of saxophone with rock style.

Alex Graham feat.吳文欽

Saxophonist, composer and Jupiter saxophone endorser. Alex Graham is an internationally recognized performer and educator who has performed as a leader or sideman with a variety of artists at festivals, clubs, and/or concert halls all over the world. He has been awarded fellowships and residencies to compose original music, and has composed and arranged for small group, big band and studio orchestra. He currently directs the Mackinac Jazz Initiative on Mackinac Island, MI where he has been teaching jazz studies to selected university students every summer since 2008. His most recent CD on Origin Records, Brand New, was ranked in jazzweek.com’s top 50 nationally for airplay, and made several top 10 lists in the year it was released. Dr. Graham completed his doctorate in Jazz Studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY in 2009, and is an Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.

The Tunghai Jazz Club

The Tunghai jazz club was founded in February 25th of 2010. Although the club has a brief history, it has established its exquisite reputation by being selected as performers for the Taichung Jazz Festival in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Performances on and off campus are also lauded by students and faculty members as well as the general community. Furthermore, Tunghai Jazz Club is one of the very few university jazz club in Taiwan along the likes of National Taiwan University jazz club,National Chiayi University jazz club and National Cheng Kung University jazz club.

Spicy Country Project

Spicy Country, a Modern Jazz Performance Project, is for the establishment of purpose we are trying to create more possibility of Music.The presented music are almost composed independently or arranged from Jazz Standard and the style includes Fusion, Acid Jazz, Latin Jazz, Straight Swing⋯...any which are popular in ages after 1960s! Especially, to the ways of presenting, our band playing is combined with the irregular Jazz instruments and there will be a Jazz Combo as the main body. We have held a same-name concert, Spicy Country, in August 26th on 2016 and that is the beginning of S.C.P. In the concert, there was a combination of Classic woodwind quintet and Jazz rhythm section to try to show a new conception of instrumentation. For the main idea, that is we want to create a new symphony.

Still Wind Orchestra

Still Wind Orchestra is an innovative band that mix the ingredient of classical music with various genres of pop music to create a brand new style. "Music Equality", our concept, claim that everyone can play music; everyone can enjoy music!

Lucy Ying-Chen Lin Jazz Quartet

As a quartet previously awarded as one of the 2016 Music Stars by the Cultural Affairs Department of New Taipei City, these young and talented musicians in Taiwan are gathered by Lucy Ying-Chen Lin, who is the first Taiwanese jazz saxophone player went to New Orleans, the origin of jazz music, to study performance for her MA degrees. Other than Lucy Lin, the other members are the pianist, Chih-Ting Lu, the double bass player, Yu-Jia Liu, and the drummer, Chien-Yen Chan. The quartet are frequently invited to many music performance activities in different forms of instrumentation and their performance styles go flexibly across Dixieland, Swing, Bebop, R&B, Funk, Pop and Folk song.
